March Madness

We’re very close to the NCAA’s (National Collegiate Athletic Association) yearly basketball tournament. Nicknamed March Madness, this tournament gets plenty of attention from everyone across the country, from die-hard basketball fans to the average office goer. That’s because, when it comes to March Madness, the excitement hardly stays on the court.

In fact, a major chunk of the fun happens off the court, or to be more specific, online.

We’re here to tell you all the essential stuff about March Madness. From venues, dates, and special events to a bit of history of the annual college basketball tournament, we’ve explained just about everything. Continue reading!

A Brief History of March Madness

History time!

The first NCAA men’s basketball tournament was held in 1939, but it wasn’t hyped up as it is today. It was outshined by the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), which was considered a more prestigious title and featured some of the top schools in the USA.

However, that changed as the NCAA tournament got more attention, eventually featuring better teams and generating more television revenue.

The term “March Madness” was coined by Henry V. Porter, an Illinois High School Association (IHSA) official. He used the term to describe the buzz around the annual Illinois high school basketball tournament.

Then, in 1982, CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger made a reference to it when covering the tournament. That, along with UCLA’s seven straight title wins, gave a massive spike to the tournament’s popularity, overshadowing the NIT.

The IHSA and the NCAA currently hold the rights to the brand after a trademark lawsuit in 1996.

What’s in Store for March Madness 2026?

March Madness 2026 seems to be just as exciting as, if not more exciting than last year’s edition.

And like every year, there are teams that the oddsmakers and national outlets predict are strong contenders. Here are the teams that are considered favorites to win March Madness 2026.

  • Duke
  • Michigan
  • Arizona

These three aside, the defending champions, Florida, are also among the teams that are expected to win March Madness 2026.

How to Watch March Madness 2026

There are multiple ways you can watch this year’s March Madness. You can choose between

  • Live TV Streaming Services: The most expensive option on the list. It will probably set you back by roughly $100 per month.
  • OTT Streaming Services: The affordable and recommended option. Odds are you are already subscribed to one (or more) of the numerous OTT services that stream March Madness 2026. Opting for this method will cost approximately $15 to $20 per month.
  • The Official March Madness Live App: The only free method on the list. With the app, you can watch the men’s tournament for one hour a day. This will require some planning on when your favorite team is playing, but it is a free method, nonetheless. Also, you will have to log in with your TV cable provider’s credentials to watch for more than an hour.
  • The Local Sports Bar: This is a fun, albeit expensive, way to experience March Madness 2026. The fun part is watching the game with your friends, along with other college basketball fans. The not-so-fun part is paying for the beer and food.

There is another method to watch March Madness 2026. You could spend about $20 on an indoor antenna and attempt to pick up signals of popular OTA services. The chances of this working are 50-50.

All the Fun Outside the Court

Now that you’re aware of the dates, venues, and how you can watch the games, let’s now focus on the fun outside the court.

March Madness is one of the most viewed events on American television. The average viewership for three years stands at approximately 9.1 million, 9.7 million, and 10 million. And the interesting part is that these numbers go up during the later stages of the tournament.

In addition to watching the games with their friends, fans engage in some games of their own. Here are some fun events that often happen alongside each year’s March Madness.

Bracket Challenges

This is, by far, the most popular event that the average college basketball fan participates in.

All you have to do is fill out the tournament’s 68-team bracket, meaning you will be predicting the winners of the games, right from the first round all the way to the championship game.

The thrilling aspect of bracket challenges is that prediction brackets, once submitted, cannot be altered. The deadline for bracket predictions for this year’s March Madness is the tip-off of the first game on March 19.

There are also free and paid pools for bracket predictions. This means that you also get a chance to earn some money. Make sure you refer to local gambling laws and federal statutes before participating in paid pools.

Popular networks also host no-fee public challenges. Be sure to take a look at them as well.

As for free pools, the prize is usually the feeling that you were right all along and, of course, bragging rights.

Viewing Parties

Basketball fans often gather en masse to watch the games. These spots can be anything, from pubs and bars to big screens at popular locations. Viewing parties with big screens usually include poolside viewing, VIP booths, and live betting.

These viewing parties are more than just about basketball games. There are usually drinks and food involved. Not to forget, bracket banter.

Meme Face Off

Online banter is a crucial part of March Madness. Fans often engage in full-on meme battles where nothing is left out. From unbelievable buzzer beaters and teams choking out of the blue to office workers pretending to work while checking scores, the topics for memes are endless.

Here is an interesting fact: There is a survey that says that 28% of office workers watch March Madness games while at work, averaging two hours every weekday.

Final Thoughts

The Florida Gators won March Madness 2025. On April 6, we’ll know whether we have a new NCAA champion or whether the Gators will defend the title.

Even if the Gators do win, they still have a long way to go in terms of beating the number of consecutive men’s basketball championships. The current record of 7 NCAA men’s championships is held by UCLA.

All said, there is going to be no shortage of excitement for the next 21 days. From expected results to shocking upsets, unbelievable plays to nasty fouls, and all the hype online for bracket predictions, March Madness 2026 is going to be a hell of a ride.

And, a very useful distraction from the current state of the world.
